Nutrition is a confusing world. Do you count your macros for example? Do you even know what a macro is?! (I didn't until my training btw so don't stress).
For information: macro's are your macronutrients - the 3 main things your body needs and which should be included in all meals: carbohydrates, fats & protein.
I get asked nutrition questions ALL of the time so, as a starting point I thought I'd give some of my favourite breakfasts!
Breakfast genuinely is the most important meal of the day, so be sure not to skip it! For those of you who say "I'm not hungry in the morning" do you have a tea or coffee first thing? Or even multiple? I ask this because caffeine is an appetite suppressant, making you think you're not hungry, when in fact you most likely are. What if you swapped them around, so eat breakfast and then have your tea or coffee?
We can often fall into a routine of eating the same foods each day or week - I am definitely guilty of this - which gets damn boring! So maybe give yourself a small goal for the next month, how about trying 1 new breakfast each week?
As a starting point, my favourite breakfasts are below, if you've not tried one of them (or any) before then give it a go and let me know which is your favourite:
Overnight oats: these for me include mashed banana, oats, greek yoghurt, a teaspoon of cocoa powder & vanilla essence or vanilla protein. This is a family friendly breakfast, I make it for my daughter and I but swap out the protein powder for vanilla essence for Lily and only use half a teaspoon of cocoa for her.
Weetabix! With a banana and honey - super cheap, speedy & easy :). Can't go wrong!
Smoked salmon on rye bread (or a wholemeal bagel) with low fat crème fraîche & chives
Porridge with grated apple and cinnamon. One of Lily's favourites, she gobbles it right up! I grate the apple and cook it in with the porridge on the hob as then it goes lovely and sweet.
Eggs & smashed avocado on wholemeal toast
I don't actually have a top one out of these, I love them all. Although I just thought of another one I really like but didn't include: peanut butter and sliced banana on wholemeal toast - SO YUM! The main thing is, is that they're all pretty quick and easy to prepare, which if you're anything like me in the morning, is a very good thing! :)
There are so many different options for breakfast, I just think people find it harder to get excited about the beginning of the day as they do for lunch or dinner.
Have a bash at making these and let me know which is your favourite!!
