The Problem With Diet Culture

Hellooooo!!

My goodness it's been a while since I last wrote on here and I'm so excited to bring back

writing!!! Can you tell?

I keep seeing these adverts on TV for a meal delivery service that are designed to help you lose weight.

This in theory is a great idea. It makes it so easy for anyone who is struggling with weight loss to be able to work towards their goal but without having to really think.

And herein lies the problem.

What this and the other diet companies don't do, is teach you how to lead an active, healthy and balanced lifestyle.

If something is just delivered to you and you don't have to think about how it's made up, it's brilliant for convenience and for helping you to feel less overwhelmed but you don't develop new habits. Therefore it will be incredibly difficult for you to keep the weight off.

Your body is programmed to regain lost weight for up to 2 years after. It will send signals to your brain, encouraging you to overeat so that it can regain what was most familiar. You can combat this by learning how to eat a balanced diet and be more active. If you create a whole new lifestyle, you will find it MUCH easier to get to your healthiest place and perhaps most importantly, be able to MAINTAIN it!

By focusing on developing a healthy lifestyle, it easily becomes a way of life and you can say goodbye to yo-yo dieting once and for all!

Now, I totally get that life is busy, plus there is SO much mixed information out there, how do you make sense of it all?

In short, it absolutely does not have to be this overwhelming, complicated beast.

Boiled down, it's simply about 2 things:

  1. Getting your portion sizes right so that you only consume what you need (or less if you're trying to lose weight)

  2. Increasing your activity levels

Sure there are optimal ways of doing it and that's where someone like me can help but if having a trainer or nutrition coach isn't for you, then this is the place to start...

  • Find a friend or family member to do it alongside so that you can hold each other accountable,

  • Keep in mind as to WHY you want to do it

  • Get moving, focus on doing things you ENJOY and that make you feel good.

In terms of food, try eating until you're about 80% full and include a good balance of protein, carbs and healthy fats.

The main things I want you to take away from this are:

  • One problem with diet culture is that it does not teach you how to create a healthy lifestyle. All it does it get you to a point but not then, how to stay there!

  • If you have someone who you can do it with, then just get going - eat less, move more

  • Really focus on WHY and remember it

  • ENJOY yourself!!!!!!!!!!

This is something I'm very passionate about (can you tell?!) and I know that you absolutely can build that lifestyle for yourself and I promise, you will not regret it.

If you have any questions, would like some specific advice or want to understand more about how I can support you, drop me a note and we'll have a chat.
